To really lower property taxes, you have to raise state taxes

That’s the fair thing to do, too, but state lawmakers always avoid it

March 29, 2014

New York leaders have been buried in budget negotiations lately, trying to pass the state’s 2014-15 spending plan by the April 1 deadline....

you didn't mention that ABOUT HALF OF THE PROPERTIES IN SARANAC LAKE ARE TAX EXEMPT BECAUSE THEY ARE NON PROFIT...THEY MAY BE CLASIFIED AS NON PROFIT BUT THEY PAY THEIR EXECUTIVES HUGE SALARIES.THE HOSPITAL FOR EXAMPLE..THE POLICE DEPT TAKES UP MORE THAN HALF THE VILLAGE BUDGET..I DON'T THINK THE POLICE DEPT SHOULD BE ELIMINATED ALL AT ONCE, BUT KEEP THE GUS ON TILL THEY ARE ELIGIBLE FOR RETIREMENT AND DO NOT FILL ANY POSITIONS LET ATTRITION DO THE JOB..THE STATE POLICE WOULD THEN TAKE OVER.THE STATE IS ALWAYS GIVING US UNFUNDED MANDATES, SO LET'S GIVE THEM ONE...JUST THINK FOLKS YOUR VILLAGE TAX WOULD BE CUT IN HALF WITHOUT THE P0LICE DEPT. DO SOMETHING ABOUT TAX EXEMPT PROPERTIES(THAT MUST BE AT STATE LEVEL I'M SURE) AND OUR TAXES WOULD REALLY DROP BUT WE ARE THE STATE AREN'T WE?......THAT'S MY TWO CENTS WORTH

You are dead wrong on this one. Take Tupper Lake as an example. 775 students...75 teachers...25 assistants earning from $30-40k?? A secretary to the Superintendent, to each principal, to the athletic director, two account clerks, AND a business manager? What do these people do all day? Why does the athletic director need a secretary? Times are tough for everyone. Teachers are going to have to rough it by having larger classes and (gasp) no assistant. Some classes have only 8 students, many just 10. If you add the average Tupper Lake teachers salary along with their benefit package, we are talking over $120,000 per year, per teacher. Average. For many its much more. Tupper Lake has teachers making $90,000 a year, many $75,000. For a class size of 10 WITH an assistant? Give me a break! Start cutting, McGowan! These teachers are spoiled! If they can't handle a class of 20, they shouldn't be employed. Don't even get me started on their dismal 16% college preparation rate.....

There may be some truth in the hs fb statement since fb costs more than all other sports combined but remains sacrosanct as a budget item.

But you'll have to explain how "dumb" kids are profitable for parents. I know the government likes it that way to prevent critical thinking and the revolt that would certainly arise if more people practiced it but an incompetent adult child is a liability not an asset.
