Increasing bed tax would be a mistake

If Essex County is looking for more revenue, instead of raising the bed tax, start collecting sales tax and bed tax from all the vacation homes that are rented in the area. These owners are in direct competition with area hotels that have to pay sales and bed tax plus pay commercial rates for utilities while the vacation home owners collect substantial rental fees free and clear. When traveling to other areas and renting vacation rentals, sales and bed tax are included. Why not here?

TruthBTold is correct.

The editorial is also correct. Essex County is sucking Lake Placid dry. All bed tax proceeds should be used for tourism promotion efforts.
