Tupper Lake has a serious problem and it could have been prevented. The school board does exactly what the union wants. $30,000 plus per employee, per year for health benefits? Why has the school board agreed to pay for family coverage all these years? The employees family doesn't work for the district. Past school boards were appointing teachers nearing retirement to very high paying positions rather than hire someone from the outside at a much lower salary. "New" appointee works 5 years and retires at a much higher wage. In years past, the district was paying the athletic director $120,000 per year. I live in a school district with 20,000 plus students, 2nd best district in my state and the principal of a high school with 2000 plus kids only earns $90,000, and the Superintendent of the entire district $130,000. The Tupper Lake teachers union and the school board have been ripping off the taxpayer for a very long time.

Why is that so 'funny' DW?? It is what it is; and my friend, the dire straights of TLCSD is it... Saranac Lake is the same distance as Long Lake, and in the same County. Hamilton County is where Long Lake resides. On the St. Lawrence County part, Colton is the most logical, if Pierpont accepts the proposal.

bj, you're so funny! With whom will they consolidate??? Long Lake School is the closest. They are at least twenty miles from anywhere. The cost of fuel alone will increase everyone's taxes! As for Placid Schools...if they're made to consolidate they'd be better off splitting and Wilmington going with Ausable Valley.

What about your reported fact "up by about 10 percent, which a study of the merger idea said would happen once the two districts merged"? What about this reported fact by you " This ignores the reality that without state aid, Northville residents - like many towns - could not operate their school districts as they exist now." Is Andy threatening to withhold aid? He sure must not care about the students! My way or no way is kinda childish and coercive. Does anyone out there remember the true costs of the Keeseville and Ausable Forks Schools consolidation?

Costly because of State mandates that is. Costly because of Teacher contracts. Costly because of retirement obligations. Costly because Andy's making it so! But what about the costs of a new school to handle all the new students in the new district? How about transportation costs to that new school?
