Barbra Rice is indeed a great choice for county legislator, however it was disappointing to see the Enterprise repeat a statement that is inaccurate and divisive. The southern end of the county does not pay more taxes than the northern part. The largest source of county revenue is from sales tax, the vast majority of which is collected in a single zip code (Malone)due to a concentration of energy companies, retailers, auto dealerships and lodging facilities. While the lake front properties in the southern part of the county generate slightly more in property taxes, that total number is millions of dollars less that sales tax totals. Do not forget that county facilities in the northern part of the county do NOT generate property taxes. If those were located in Saranac Lake, certainly property tax contribution from the southern end of the community would be less. Working together and mutual respect are qualities that we must strive to achieve.
