Your points are well taken but you forgot a couple of essential points related to freeedom of the press. First and very obvious in it's effects on accuracy and depth of media news coverage is the fact that nearly all major media outlets are owned by six corporate entities: General Electric, Walt Disney, News Corp., TimeWarner, Viacom and CBS. Any news that deos not fit the corporate agenda of these Big 6 is unlikely to get much if any coverage.

Secondly, where is the outrage among the press over the abuse of government and corporate whistleblowers? How can even a conscientious reporter (there are few among the mainstream press) expect to uncover truth when the witnesses to wrongdoing fear their own wellbeing if they testify?
