your view makes a LOT of sense!!!!if necessary they might outlaw roosters as they are not needed for egg production and are noisy and mean. then again there is presently no problem so it is not necessary to pass a law now.

All is OK until the neighbor's rooster next door wakes you up at 4:30 in the morning and you scream, "Why doesn't the village have a law against this?"

Why shouldn't the village be proactive when the see a potential problem coming at them?

duke, have you contacted the village to suggest they ban roosters?.probably not, so as most of us do in this day and age you just grumble about it. make your views known to officials, then grumble about them not having a law.beleive it or not, some folks find a rooster crowing at all hours of the nite soothing

I'm all for people growing their own food but a rooster on my street will have a short life expectancy.

Having the chickens in the first place would obviously include NO ROOSTERS............ The proposed law is nothing more than a strong arm act by the community " developer" . He acts on fear and not fact and he has help with that thought!

I'd worry about the coyotes and foxes, even neighbrohood cats and dogs getting to the chickens for an easy meal.

Chickens smell so bad that they should be banned from town limits. Aside from the fact they attract rodents, foxes and everything else that wants to destroy them, all of which are disgusting on their own. If you want to live on a farm, then move to a farm. If you want fresh eggs then go to Nori's and buy them for 8 dollars a dozen like everybody else.

I understand the concern over roosters being a noise hazzard but isnt that covered under a noise ordinance? I have 2 male rabbits for my son, we have an outside elevated pens and the waste is given to the neighbor for her gardens. Am i going to have to give these up, I hope not we have had them for almost two years. Is this an issue of noise or smell. Personally i have never had a complaint about my 2 rabbits. If we do pass an ordinance lets make sure it addresses the current need, and not necessarily proactive. Personally i dont see a huge issue with it in the village so why pass a ordinace before their is a need?

There are definitely some problems with keeping livestock in settled areas, which is why it's generally not allowed. If everybody in Saranac Lake had chickens, it would be a problem.

That said, I don't think there's any big rush to build a chicken coop in every backyard. And one of the nice things about the Adirondacks is that people are generally pretty considerate, and do the right thing by their neighbors without needing a law to tell them to. I appreciate Evans trying to be proactive, but I say wait and see, keep an eye on things. If we need a law later, write one then. If we don't, then don't burden people with a law we might not need.

Raising chicken's is more than most comprehend. Lot's of dirty waste, lot's of foul smells, and sometimes noise that is above what a neighbor might (or should) wish to tolerate. However, WHERE in this community has it become an issue? Mr. Evans, please name the complaints you have received. And Van Cott, please be more specific with 'Concerns'!!! I don't see either, so why are you wasting time on this issue? Proactive is typically good when appropriate vision to curtail an immediate problem developing. THIS IS POLITICAL B.S. and they both need to be replaced next term. Really Paul??? backing this nonsense? Evans needs to get back to DEVELOPMENT!!!!! Hence his title!!!
