for decades saranac lake has been a village without a plan and we are famous for nothing. we are in fact timbuc-to and always will be. we finally have a chance to be famous for hiking trails and we have too many people fighting it. the train as much as i love it is a total failure, and is headed for the junk heap one way or thing's for sure, it will end up dead. we have this one chance to draw LOTS of tourists and we can't let any group derail it. the hiking trails up the 6 peaks is an excellent idea, but can not succeed with out visitors and the hiking trail is the way to draw them.

I like the idea of the mountain peaking using local hills. Definitely could use the rail trail as well, but it still would be nice if the train was expanded to include Tupper and beyond, with a trail alongside. What is concerning is the selection process for events---like forcing the bicycle race out of the picture for flimsy reasons ie losing downtown biz, disrupting traffic, etc. You get the same from Winter Carnival happenings, Merchants' Halloween candy giveaways, parades, etc. All events possible for the area should be given consideration and the opportunity to succeed...only then will SL become a destination and not a ghost town.

A trail alongside the railroad from Lake Clear to Beaver River will never happen. Jim McCulley summed it up in his guest commentary. Anyone who has ridden the rails between those two points knows why. Permits would never be issued to fill the welands that exist on that route. The cost and logistics would be prohibitive too. It's time to give up on the train running the full distance and move on to the trail.

I think the 6er idea is a good one and I commend the organizers for doing it. There is no one fighting this idea and we don't have to have a trail in the rail bed for anyone to get here to do the climbs. People can drive a car, walk or ride a bike to get here as they do anywhere else in the country. There is more than "one chance" for SL or anywhere else in the mountains. There are many chances. We just have to be creative and come up with the ideas. If one particular idea doesn't come about quickly, then come up with another while the first materializes. SL is far from a backwater. It's improved a lot over the last decade and it is on a positive path. Lastly, if the village didn't come up with the 6er idea, then many would criticize it for not doing anything. They lit the candle in the darkness...and the darkness is now not so black. Go 6ers.
