LAKE PLACID — New York state could see more taps for maple syrup in the near future if advocates of the product, including U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer, are successful in their recent push for increasing production. In April, Schumer, D-N.Y., introduced a bill called the Maple TAP Act that would provide grants for land owners who use their maple trees to produce syrup. Another announcement was expected from Schumer this week, but his scheduled trip to the American Maple Museum in the small village of Croghan in Lewis County was postponed until later in the summer. Michael Farrell is the director at Uihlein Forest, a Cornell Cooperative Extension sugarhouse in Lake Placid, and has been working with Schumer’s office to look at ways to realize the full potential of the maple syrup industry. As part of his Ph.D. project at Cornell, Farrell has been studying recent trends in the market. Farrell said he sees a tremendous amount of promise for New York producers in the near future. “
