Fr. County may give mileage pay to fire trainers
MALONE — Franklin County may start reimbursing state fire training instructors for mileage incurred when driving within the county. Currently, the state only reimburses them for mileage incurred in trips that cross county lines, but not within a county, “no matter how big the county is,” said county Office of Emergency Services Director Malcolm Jones at a county board meeting Thursday morning. This, he said, is unfair in a county the size of Franklin, where the drive from Malone in the north to Tupper Lake in the south is 60 miles. Jones said he has spoken to officials with the state Office of Fire Prevention and Control, and they told him they don’t make the policy and can’t do anything about it. Jones said he would budget for the mileage, but he wasn’t sure if the county was legally allowed to pay mileage to a state employee, since they aren’t on the county payroll. “I’m willing to budget it, but I don’t want the county to get in trouble by doing it,” he said.
