A year of simmering rather than boiling
This issue is full of things that happened in 2007, but the year is also noteworthy for what didn't happen. In Tupper Lake, where there was once hope of skiing at the former Big Tupper Ski Area by this Christmas, the Adirondack Club and Resort developers hit the brakes as spring turned to summer and haven't stepped back on the gas pedal since. In Saranac Lake, Wal-Mart hasn't made a peep all year. And in the Lake Placid/Wilmington area, which closed 2006 with a flurry of state investment in a new conference center, new ski trails at Whiteface Mountain and an Adirondack Museum branch, there hasn't been a big grant announcement yet from the new governor. What has happened in the meantime, however, has been most important, albeit quieter. In Lake Placid, the state funds from Gov. George Pataki's last blast of patronage were quickly put into action.
