Today show hosts to try Sochi luge track

February 7, 2014 - Chris Knight
Lake Placid's Sandy Caligiore walked into the press room of the Gorki Media Center on Wednesday carrying a pair of plastic bags.

"I hold in my hands the luge suits for Matt Lauer and Al Roker," Caligiore announced to Lou and I.

Caligiore, the press officer for Lake Placid-based USA Luge, explained that the two hosts of NBC's Today show will get to experience, for the second time, the thrill of racing down the Olympic track as a double's luge team.

They did so during the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy. You can revisit that awkward but funny bit in this clip.

It features the then-doubles luge team of Brian Martin and Mark Grimmette, who lives in Lake Placid, now works as program director for USA Luge and is here in Sochi.

Caligiore said the latest luge adventure for Lauer and Roker will be taped sometime during the second week of the games, after all the luge events have wrapped up.

Roker saved the "career" of an associate back in the 1970's - as head of the college radio station @ SUNY Oswego - he had given him a "pass" over the objections of lesser radio-nerd officials. But his habit of putting on a long album cut & leaving the booth for the bar in the same bldg. had stopped.

He probably would never had made it to us in NYC, never had been w/us in Belgium in 1984 working a Texaco Europe gig, would never have had Olympian Eddie Merckx build him that $4k+ touring bike that he insisted be put on the enclosed backporch when touring Saranac Lake & the Adirindacks, & Sam The Dog would never have eaten his fine Italian leather racing gloves. I'd offered to mail them back after they "had passed," but that offer had been declined.....

Say hi to Roker & Lauer, but aoid Costas.
