A little response

January 30, 2012 - Rick Burdt
Wow, what a welcome to the blogging world I’ve gotten. I must say that if you go against what the main stream media is saying then be prepared to be scrutinized. I have not read every single blog ever posted here, but I don’t believe I’ve ever seen any picked apart as much as mine.

I guess my main point to the whole global warming issue is that it is not an exact science and there is plenty of doubt out there. Just because more scientists agree with one theory over another does not mean it must be true. Remember, the earth was flat for a long time and Pluto was a planet until just a few years ago. Pluto losing its planetary status has no real political impact so that is a case where it’s okay for the majority of scientists to have been wrong for all those years. But, what if all those scientists are wrong about man’s impact on the planet? No matter which science you believe, the political fallout would be immense.

I do not believe we should go back to the completely unregulated days of pouring hazardous wastes into the nearest waterway or filling the sky with noxious smoke from factories. You won’t find a single incandescent light bulb in my house and over the last year I’ve replaced most of the windows and doors to make my home more energy efficient. I’ll admit that my main goal was not to save the planet, but to save my wallet.

I also want to respond to the writer of the letter to the editor. Archeologists estimate that modern humans have been on the earth approximately 200,000 years. I stated that just last year earth's population hit 7 billion and you corrected me. You are right and I was off by one year. You also stated that I didn’t take rising ocean levels into consideration. You are right again. I didn’t take the fact that ocean levels are rising, and have been for the last 20,000 years, into account because I didn’t want to turn the blog into a book. If I had, I would have also mentioned that the rising levels have tapered off drastically over the last 8,000 years. You end it by stating my true agenda, political finger pointing. How right you are again. The title of my blog column alone should indicate that fact. Not to mention that in my opening blog, I stated I was a conservative republican.

I want to finish this post by saying thanks to all the responses, both positive and negative. I’ve got plenty more to write about and look forward to doing just that.

You guys value the scientific opinion of radio talk-show hosts over the collective scientific judgement of the scientists who have spent their lives studying something. Doesn't that seem weird to you?

Rick - Climate change isn't a "belief" thing - its about science and what the evidence says. You conservatives never actually look at the evidence that the scientists present. You only get your science from conservative pundits. These guys don't look at the evidence either. They just listen to each other.

This seems to be an anti-elitism thing. Anyone who actually knows something is an elitist so you can only get your information from people who are untrained and basically uninformed.

Ive said this before - but why not read the US national academy reports???

Rick...the science is not "exact" only insofar as there is not one single defining characteristic of climate change. The evidence comes from several sources and it is overwhelming that it is happening at a rapid pace. Ocean temperature rise, loss of glaciation, and changes in weather patterns are but a few of the observations. Only right wing pseudo scientists are in disagreement with the conclusion that rapid climate change is happening and that the burning of fossil fuels by humans is the primary cause. I notice that you provide a link to Fox News. Are you aware that a study conducted by the Univ. of Maryland concluded that Fox news viewers are more likely to be misinformed on issues than viewers of other news sources? It's worth reading the study and watching something else, like MSNBC or CNN and CSPAN. By the way, I have a BA in environmental science and I have seen much of the data for myself.
