Thank you to local farms and Cloudsplitter Foundation

To the editor:

On behalf of the students and families of Northern Lights School, we would like to thank Cloudplitter Foundation, Harmony Hills Farm and North Country Creamery for providing nourishing, local food for our children. Northern Lights School was the recipient of a grant from Cloudsplitter Foundation, enabling us to purchase local eggs and yogurt for our students for the remainder of the 2018-19 school year. Partnering with local farms benefits everyone, from the farmers to the students themselves.

At Northern Lights School, we feel it is important to teach the young children in our programs the importance of healthy, balanced nutrition. The snacks we serve at school fuel the bodies and minds of our students, ages zero to 6, as they play, create and explore. As part of our daily routine, we serve snacks made from whole, organic ingredients. Children benefit from the hands-on experience they gain at snack time. Pouring water, adding vegetables, using utensils, folding napkins and tidying up create opportunities for fine and gross motor skill development. Students learn about responsibility and teamwork by setting and clearing the table, tending their place settings and sharing with each other at the table.

Northern Lights School offers a nature-based Waldorf-inspired education for a vibrant, diverse and forward-thinking community. Children ages birth to 6 can enroll in various programs, and we offer educational opportunities and support for families with young children, which strengthens our whole community. More information is available at www.northernlightsschool.org.

Thank you to Cloudsplitter Foundation and to these farms for making this opportunity possible for our students,
