A veteran’s thanks

To the editor:

Memorial Day 2018 has come and gone, and with it the ceremonies, speeches and remembrances that make it not only the unofficial beginning of summer but the yearly national check-up of our patriotic spirit. The Adirondack Daily Enterprise once again dedicated its front page to the people, veterans and organizations within the Tri-Lakes community, taking the time to remember a simple fact, our success as a nation, our virtue and goodness takes effort and sacrifice.

On Saturday a Veterans Appreciation Breakfast was held for the benefit of our living veterans at the First United Methodist Church in Saranac Lake. Hosted by the United Men’s Ministry, the Masonic Whiteface Lodge and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, it was a blessed event augmented by a score of eager volunteers and generous donations from Hyde Mobil, the Triple Green Jade Bakery and the Cabin Fever Quilters. The community once again showed its heart and spirit. The address by Col. (Ret.) David Fitz-Enz reminded all who attended of our gallant local history and the mantle that is continually being passed to our brightest and best of our youth in the armed services.

As commander of the VFW post, I wish to thank all of our outstanding volunteers, veterans and guests for making this event a success.
