Quiet neighbor left towns a great legacy

To the editor:

One person can forever change the place they love.

Bob Damoth moved to Cranberry Lake to enjoy his retirement.

He was a quiet neighbor — enjoying the peace and good people in his community.

When he passed in 2011, he left his entire estate to create a permanent fund to support the not-for-profits in the Clifton-Fine community. The Damoth Fund money is managed by the Adirondack Foundation. The Adirondack Foundation is based in Lake Placid and exists solely to help not-for-profits and families create and manage philanthropic funds. They are a very successful and helpful partner in supporting our communities.

EVERY YEAR, the Damoth Fund provides $15,000 EACH to the Cranberry Lake Fire Department, the Clifton Library, the Clifton-Fine Hospital and for scholarships for Clifton-Fine graduates. In addition, $15,000 is available to award to local not-for-profits working to better our place — the Clifton-Fine region in the northwestern Adirondacks.

Mr. Damoth’s legacy, supported by the strong infrastructure at the Adirondack Foundation, is unmatched in our little region.

His generosity changes and saves lives. We are forever grateful to our neighbor who believed in his community and its capacity to grow.

He believed in our ability to take better care of each other and our place. We are forever grateful.

He has allowed the groups his fund supports to dream bigger and to think about what is possible, to take risks, to care more, to do more, to be more.

His legacy project list is long and varied. From purchasing equipment for the food pantry to re-establishing trails to firefighting equipment to invasive screening training to historical kiosks to providing start-up support for the amazingly successful annual art show … and those are just a few projects his legacy supports.

It takes a community … and in our case, it takes the love and devotion of one man and the fund management provided by the Adirondack Foundation.

Thank you, Mr Damoth. We all know how much you cared, and we hope that, somehow, you know what a transformational difference your legacy makes here in Clifton-Fine.

Sincerely,

Annette Craig
