Federal gov’t should keep Head Start

To the editor:

Recently I talked to Gail, my daughter-in-law, about federal programs that might be threatened by Trump’s administration. One of my favorite programs is Head Start. This program is successful and important. In Lake Placid, under the direction of Joanne Hare, the Head Start program works effectively to give children a quality preschool education.

I will tell you why Head Start has been important to me since 1968. That year, a summer Head Start program was housed in the cafeteria of the Lake Placid Central School. My son Tony was enrolled. As a parent, I was encouraged to volunteer and bring my younger son, Jack, with me. Mrs. Ortloff was the teacher and became my mentor. I loved being with the children, and I loved working with this amazing teacher.

Head Start offered so much more than just a preschool program. The parents of these little ones were made to feel that they had a role to play in making Head Start a valued part of their life and their children’s lives. Emerson Nye was the director of Head Start for our area. He encouraged parents to take classes that were offered through the Head Start program.

This opportunity changed my life. I had felt like a failure. I had only attended college for three semesters, and I had few job skills. The classes I took and the experience as a Head Start volunteer parent led to a job as an assistant teacher working with Mrs. Ortloff. I credit Mrs. Ortloff and Head Start with the positive changes in me that led me to the job I have had for 41 years at the Lake Placid Public Library.

I am still enjoying Head Start. When Joanne and her staff bring the Head Starters to the library, I have so much fun. I love telling these beautiful little children stories and singing with them. They make that day special for me.

Please support this valuable program which has helped so many children and families for over 50 years.

Sincerely,

Linda Blair
