How to sum up Saranac Lake?

We had thought last week’s presentation on branding Saranac Lake would unveil a new logo, catchphrase and/or graphic styling, but no — the committee hasn’t gotten to that yet.

Instead, the presentation consisted of a great deal of gathered data and some vaguely positive text that might look nice on a website and/or brochure. That is valuable, and we’re also glad the Saranac Lake Brand Advisory Panel is engaging the broader community before the process is all done.

But we must admit that it left us wanting more.

Therefore, to amuse ourselves and perhaps a few of you, we came up with some of our own potential slogans for Saranac Lake.

We were inspired by the suggestion at the meeting by Vini Fallica, a former Enterprise photographer and retired nurse: “If You Don’t Belong Anywhere Else, You Belong Here.” We like that; it would look pretty snazzy on the signs welcoming people to the village.

Or, perhaps, one of these our newsroom staff came up with in about two minutes:

¯ “If You Like It, You Like It. If You Don’t, You Don’t.”

¯ “Escape from Lake Placid”

¯ “Very Far Away from the Saranac Brewery”

¯ “Home of the 10-Car Traffic Jam on Friday Afternoon”

¯ “A Little Bit of Many Things, and Not Too Much of Most.”

Please don’t take them seriously; we don’t.

Although, on a different note, perhaps Saranac Lake could be called “A Place to Breathe.”

This village, divided between two counties and three towns, has had so many slogans: “The Little City in the Adirondacks,” “Pioneer Health Resort,” “The Green Side of the Big Apple,” “The All-America City,” “The Capital of the Adirondacks” and “The Adirondacks’ Coolest Place.” While we like some of them, none has really stuck. We agree with sweeping them into the archives, but coming up with a good new one is going to be hard.

This village’s people tend to resist pat characterization.

(Correction: An earlier version of this editorial said Vini Fallica is a current nurse. He retired Feb. 28.)
