Mary Jane Tobin

Mary Jane Tobin passed away peacefully on March 11, 2019 at Elderwood of Uihlein at Lake Placid.

She was born in Albany on April 23, 1928 to Francis and Mary (Suitto) Duffy.

Mary Jane attended and graduated from Vincentian Institute in 1946. It was here that she met her future husband Michael whom she married in 1952. Upon graduation from high school, Mary Jane was employed with the New York Telephone Company, where she worked until her first child was born.

Mary Jane and Michael moved often with his job in the banking industry. They lived in Watertown, Carthage and Saranac Lake before spending their later years in Lake Placid.

Working for the Petrova Middle School in Saranac Lake as an administrative assistant from 1972 until retirement in 1990 brought her friendships she valued and continued to maintain.

Together with Michael, she fully enjoyed and took advantage of the many opportunities the Adirondacks offered, spending most of their free time camping, canoeing, hiking and cross-country skiing.

They took trips as far north as Alaska, west to Hawaii, south to Mexico and Mary Jane has kissed the Blarney Stone.

Following Michael’s passing, she continued traveling, started going to the gym and took daily walks around Mirror Lake with dear friends.

Mary Jane was predeceased by her husband Michael George, her son Michael John and her only sibling Catherine Gosstola.

Surviving her are three daughters: Kathleen Bowler (Ronald) of Saranac Lake, Nancy Austin (Paul) of Boyds, Maryland, and Susan Morse (Richard) of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. She is also survived by her grandchildren Matthew Austin (Kristin), Sarah Hewitt (Kyle), Christopher Austin, Gregory Bowler, Julie Baird (Michael), Molly Squires (Don) and Colin Morse, all who affectionately called her “Janie.”
