Robert ‘Bob’ S. Gowan

Robert “Bob” S. Gowan, 78, of Saranac Lake, died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2018, at his home with his wife by his side, as always.

Born in Saranac Lake on April 18, 1940, he was the son of Stanley and Marie (Trombley) Gowan. Bob, married Anita Hough on Jan. 20, 1962 in St. Luke’s Episcopal Church.

Bob, lovingly referred to by many as “Papa,” worked locally all his life. Bob had been employed for many years as a substitute school teacher for the Saranac Lake Central School District and he was also a member of the New York State National Guard. Bob loved traveling, hunting, ’50s music, and dining out, but most of all, he loved spending time with his grandchildren. His family was the joy of his life. Papa will be greatly missed by all.

He is survived by his wife Anita Gowan of Saranac Lake; one daughter, Barbara Jo Gowan of Waddington; two grandchildren: Corinne Gambacurta, currently attending George Washington University, and Julian Gambacurta, currently attending Clarkson University; one brother and sister-in-law, George and Bobbi Gowan of Syracuse; one sister-in-law and her husband, Ginger and William Dora of Mt. Dora Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1 at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. A funeral service will immediately follow at 7 p.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. Daniel Shumway officiating. Burial will take place in Pine Ridge Cemetery in Saranac Lake.
