Martha J. Martin
Martha Jean Martin, 89, of Rensselaer and formerly of Saranac Lake, died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2018, at Albany Medical Center.
Martha was born in Paul Smiths on Feb. 19, 1928, the daughter of Emil and Sadie (Blanchard) Block. Martha married Gilbert Martin on Oct. 18, 1946, in St. Bernard’s Church, by Fr. O’Connor.
Martha was a foster Grandmother at Stepping Stone II in East Greenbush for two years and baby-sat children in her home. Her hobbies included playing cards, walking, riding around looking at the scenery, picnicking and camping.
Martha is survived by three sons: Ronald Martin of Rensselaer, Neil Martin Sr. of Saranac Lake and Gene Martin of Albany; her brother Willy Block of Rensselaer; six grandchildren: Neil Martin Jr. of Savannah, Ga., Brook Martin of Albany, Jonathan Martin of Colorado, Chris Martin or Paul Smiths, and Dylan and Mariah Martin of Glenmont; and five great-grandchildren: Vanessa Martin of Albany, Summer Leann Martin of Savannah, Ga., and Thomas and Madison Coleman of East Greenbush.
Martha was preceded in death by her mother and father; her husband Gilbert; two sisters: Anna La Bombard, and Margaret Martin; and two brothers: Emil and Joseph Block.
Calling hours will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 15 at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. A Mass of Christian burial will take place at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb, 16, at St. Bernard’s Church, with the Rev. Patrick Ratigan officiating. Cremation will follow with Burial in St. John’s Cemetery in Lake Clear.
