Memorial Service: Nancy C. (Bartholomew) DePuy

Memorial services have been set for Nancy Clara Bartholomew DePuy, 82, of 36 Rockland Ave., Saranac Lake, who passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 13, 2017, in Albany.

Her husband of 61 years, Richard Vernon DePuy, also of Saranac Lake, and her devoted companion, was with her. The two had recently moved to the Kingsway Nursing Center in Schenectady.

Nancy Clara Bartholomew was born in Sayre, Pennsylvania on Aug. 26, 1934, with her twin sister, Marcie. She also had a younger sister Ruth. Nancy was the daughter of Marcy and Fern Bartholomew and grew up in Waverly.

Nancy graduated from the Robert Packer School of Nursing in September 1955. A week later, on Oct. 1, 1955, she married Richard “Dick” DePuy, a New York State Trooper. She and Dick had four sons: Brent, Mark, Jon, and Garth DePuy. The family moved to Saranac Lake in 1968. Nancy worked at the Adirondack Medical Center as an RN and later, she became the manager of the gift shop. She also volunteered and ran the Saranac Lake Antique Show and Sale for many years.

She was an artist, a sewer and an avid quilter. She was a member of Saranac Lake’s Cabin Fever Quilters. She made cookies, cakes, pies, strawberry jam, home-cooked dinners, beautiful jackets and vests for her daughters-in-law, and Halloween costumes-to-order for her grandchildren. Her house was decorated with her quilts, dried flower arrangements, hand-made pilgrims and witches from corn husks, antique signs, rolling pins, and cast-iron trivets, embroidery from China, her collections of milk glass and Hummels, loons, carved ducks, and miniature huskies.

Nancy enjoyed time with her grandchildren, bowling, reading and watching New York Giants football with her husband.

Despite her long struggle with ALS, Nancy always had her love for others, sense of humor and a big, infectious smile that could light up the room.

She is survived by her husband Dick of Saranac Lake; four sons: Brent (Amy) of Saranac Lake, Mark (Rita) of Natick, Massachusetts, Jon (Darlene) of Saranac Lake, and Garth (Michelle) of Delmar; six grandchildren: Sofia, Anya, Ian, Cole, Aimee and Ashley; one great-grandchild, Owen; her twin sister Marcie of Bowie, Maryland; her nieces and nephews; and many friends and caregivers.

Nancy was predeceased by her parents, and a sister Ruth of Elmira.

A memorial celebration of Nancy’s life will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, June 3 in Saranac Lake at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. A time of sharing and remembrance will take place at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. All are welcome.
