Carolyn Wojcik Scerra

Carolyn Wojcik Scerra, 36, passed away due to cancer on May 22, 2017, surrounded by her family.

Carolyn is survived by her husband Matthew and daughter Isabel, 2; her father and mother, Stephen and June (Russell) Wojcik; brother and sister Stephen Wojcik and Jessie Wojcik; grandparents Eileen Wojcik and Edwin and Gloria Russell; father- and mother-in-law William and Mary (Fitzgerald) Scerra; brothers- and sisters-in-law Michael and Kara (Scerra) Yee, and Jeremy and Jennifer (Coyne) Scerra; nieces and nephews Esther Yee (12), Hannah Yee (9) and Oden Wojcik (6); and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Carolyn graduated from the Christian Academy of Guatemala after a rich and varied education ranging from private, public, international and home schooling. She attended Gordon College, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biology, with a concentration in marine biology, in 2003. After working in industry for a few years she returned to Gordon College as both an adjunct faculty member and a graduate student in education. She earned her M.Ed. in education in 2009 and started teaching Honors and AP chemistry, along with marine biology, at North Andover High School. She married Matthew Scerra in 2012 and settled in Tewksbury, Massachusetts. In 2014, Isabel Elizabeth was born.

Carolyn was an amazing person — adventurous, intelligent, thoughtful, generous and loving — who lived life to the fullest and highly valued her family and faith. She was a bold world traveler, from her mission work in Ecuador, Guatemala, Appalachia and Echo, Florida, to her sightseeing trips throughout Central America, Southeast Asia and Europe.

In addition to being a multi-talented artist, game enthusiast, gardener, entrepreneur and chef, she had a vibrant and active social life, full of many deep and meaningful friendships. Carolyn was a dedicated, deeply caring and talented teacher who strove to help her students succeed both inside and outside the classroom, and was highly regarded by her students and fellow teachers. As a scientist, she had a passion for marine biology, conservation and scientific pedagogy, in conjunction with a love for all of God’s creation and truth.

She and Matthew were active in their church, Grace Chapel in Wilmington, Massachusetts, and often helped with nursery and Sunday school. She was a beloved daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, cousin and aunt, along with being a perfect match for Matthew and an extraordinary mother to Isabel.

A viewing was scheduled for Friday, May 26 from 10 a.m. to noon at Grace Chapel, 128 West St., Wilmington, MA 01887. A memorial service is scheduled for Sunday, May 28 from 2 to 3 p.m. at Grace Chapel in Wilmington, Massachusetts, with a reception to follow. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Carolyn’s life.
