Leander H. Lawrence

Leander H. Lawrence, 73, of Saranac Lake, passed away suddenly on Friday, Feb. 3, 2017.

Leander was born in Wilmington on April 6, 1943, to Chester and Dorothy (Warren) Lawrence.

Lee was known for his kind heart and generous spirit. His willingness to help anyone out and give the shirt off his back to anyone who may need it. He always had a special place in his heart for troubled kids. After finishing school, Lee moved to Albany, where he drove for United Traction Bus Company for about 15 years. He then moved to Lake Placid and immediately began working for the Lake Placid Village Highway Department. Soon after, he met his wife Sharon and they were married on Aug. 13, 1977.

He leaves behind his wife Sharon; children Tonya L. (Chris) Woodard, Tara Reynolds, Sean-Michael Lawrence, Leander (Lee Lee) H. Lawrence Jr. and Mike (Dayter) Lawrence; grandchildren Brendan, Cody and Nicholas Woodard, Savannah and Juliann Pickreign, Braiden and Madison Montour, James and Jason Lawrence and Michelle Lawrence; great-granddaughter Autumn Noel Woodard; sisters-in-law Shirley and her husband Rip Allen and family, Lisa and Ashton Storey and Shayla Rivers, Mary Gagnon and her significant other Jim Brooks; and many nieces and nephews.

Lee was predeceased by his parents, Chet and Dorothy Lawrence; three sons: Jimmy, Guy and Eddie Lawrence; brothers Chet, Albert, Delbert and Phil Lawrence and sisters Arlene Sawyer, Harriet Blaze, Barbara Darrah and Mary Terry; and his first wife Jana Jones.

While working at the Lake Placid Village Highway for over 25 years, he also worked for Rudy Scheller and the Lake Placid Sightseeing Company for over 30 years. Lee had a love for “Holly the Trolley” that went beyond words. He made many lifelong friendships through the trolley.

Lee was also a volunteer firefighter with the Lake Placid Volunteer Fire Department for 20 plus years. During his retirement, he spent his time with family and friends. Summers were spent camping at one of his favorite vacation spots, Fish Creek Pond Campground in Saranac Inn.

Calling hours will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7, with a Fireman’s Prayer Service at 6:30 p.m. at the M. B. Clark, Inc. funeral home in Lake Placid. A funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8 at the Adirondack Community Church, Main St., Lake Placid. The Rev Patti Molik will officiate. Cremation will follow. Burial will be at North Elba Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
