Pendragon announces Patrons’ Pick, summer season

SARANAC LAKE — “The Love List,” a comedy by Norm Foster, is the winner of Pendragon Theatre’s Patrons’ Pick and will be the theatre’s opening show of the 2018 summer season this coming June.

Last November, the theatre presented two evenings of scene readings from plays and asked audiences and friends of the theatre to vote for their favorite.

“The Love List” won the most votes with Jordan Harrison’s Marjorie Prime coming in a very close second; so close that the theatre has decided to produce that play as well in July.

The final decision on which plays hit the Pendragon stage comes from the theatre’s Executive Artistic Director Karen Lordi Kirkham.

“When deciding on the season, I wanted to focus on what brings us together- laughter and being heard being two primary unifiers,” Kirkham said. “To that end, we are presenting both the winner and runner-up of our Patrons’ Pick followed by some wonderful dramatic comedies and of course our beloved Camp Pendragon musical.”

The remainder of the theatre’s summer season in order of appearance will be: “Beauty and the Beast Jr,” Camp Pendragon’s July production; “I Hate Hamlet” by Paul Rudnick in August followed by the fall classic, Jane Austen’s “Sense and Sensibility,” adapted by Kate Hamill, which will tour to schools.

New for 2018, Pendragon will present “An October Thriller,” “The Woman in Black” by Stephen Mallatratt, followed by “Ghost Tales” and the holiday shows.

According to Kirkham, “Choosing a season is a complicated dance balancing art, budget, people, calendar, etc. This year I have been mulling over the notion of theater as a bi-partisan activity and how artists can be edgy and entertaining without being alienating. I would like to believe the reason why theater attracts people of all kinds of backgrounds is ultimately the truths presented on stage transcend ideology by presenting the human condition in all its complexity.”

Neil Simon’s comedy, “The Odd Couple: Female Version,” opens at the theatre this Feb. 3 and runs through Feb. 18.
