Comedy show Saturday at Raquette River Brewing
TUPPER LAKE — Raquette River Brewing will host an evening of professional stand up comedy with special guests Kevin Downey Jr., Dan Geurin and Aaron David Ward Friday night at 8 p.m.
Downey, Jr. will headline the show. He was recently labeled “refreshingly bizarre” by fellow comedian Joe Mulligan. He tends to shout one-liner jokes and follow them up whiny grunt.
He’ll yell something like “I like to sleep with Amish women because I can’t call them the next day,” and the grunt real loud.
Downey Jr. grew up in Detroit where he made his TV debut at age six on CKLW’s “The Bozo Show,” a kids program starring Bozo the Clown. There Downey Jr. won a hockey stick, a 12-pack of Orange Crush and some Tootsie Rolls playing. Downey Jr. attempted to play ice hockey, but was deemed to small for all the equipment and was cut from the team in his first and only season.
He later moved to Manhattan and worked as an elf at Macy’s Santaland as an elf, but lost the job after the Christmas season ended. After attending “Comic Strip Live,” Downey Jr. realized he wanted to do stand up. However, it would be three years until before he worked up the courage to go stage.
Today, Downey Jr. is headlining clubs across the U.S, and can be heard regularly on “The Bob and Tom Show”, as well as, Sirius and XM Satellite radio. He’s made TV appearance on “America’s Got Talent,” “What Not to Wear” and “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.” Downey Jr. also travels with Armed Forces Entertainment, performing to troop in places such as Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, Guam, Roi-Namur, Kwajalein Atoll, Singapore and Diego Garcia.
Geurin only recently launched his comedy career at the 42. He might not be as well known at this point but he does perform at the Funny Bone Comedy Clubs in Albany and Syracuse, the Comedy Works in Albany and Saratoga Springs and other venues throughout the Northeast.
Ward will emcee the festivities that night. His self-deprecating, sociopolitical and culturally critical comedy has entertain audiences from New Hampshire to California.
Ward began his stand up comedy career on May 31, 2002 when he lost a job and realized he had nothing left to lose by stepping on stage and making people laugh and think about what’s wrong with our world. Since then, Ward has performed throughout the Northeast and Midwest, appeared in the Boston Comedy Festival, Plymouth Rock Comedy Festival, Cape May Comedy Festival, The World Series of Comedy, and in several movies including “What I See In The Dark” and “Aftermath.” Ward appears every week on the Glenn Slingerland Situation where he provides comedic commentary.
Ward prides himself on always writing and performing new bits to keep his act exciting, fresh and original. He explores his inner demons and outer foes with honesty, integrity, and, of course, humor.
