“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”

— Dr. Seuss, “I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!”

My family has either attended or helped during the annual Read Across America event held each year at the Adirondack Carousel. My child and some of her friends have grown from sitting in awe while The Cat in the Hat read a story to making sure a younger generation share their passion for reading.

Mark the calendar for Saturday, March 4, as the Saranac Lake Teacher’s Association and the Adirondack Carousel are bringing back The Cat in the Hat from 10 a.m. to noon as part of the 20th annual National Education Association’s (NEA) Read Across America. This celebration of reading begins on the March birthday of children’s author Dr. Seuss and continues year-round providing reading resources and activities to foster a love for reading in everyone.

This year my youngest will once again be at the Adirondack Carousel hoping to share a glimpse into a world of books. She’ll be dressed as a favorite Dr. Seuss character. Which one? It’s difficult to say. She has many favorites to choose from. The event is a fast-paced, fun-filled activity, centered around books. Your child can take home complimentary books and even sign up for his/her own library card. This way children can have their own books at home, but also be able to take advantage of all the free amenities at the Saranac Lake Free Library.

I have always felt that it was never enough to just get my children to read. I’ve wanted my children to devour books. Books allow readers to travel the world without ever leaving their house. Books open up worlds and break down myths. Reading explores the impossible and helps discover the possible. Reading allows for a pleasant escape or can unlock the future.

Please join the Saranac Lake Teachers, The Saranac Lake Free Library and The Cat in the Hat at the Adirondack Carousel for an interactive morning for children of all ages. If you need further incentive, the whole event is free. Yes, free carousel rides, free snacks, free books along with a free story time. Call the Carousel with any questions 518-891-9521.
