Rangers rescue injured hiker on Little Haystack

LAKE PLACID – In the middle of a search for a missing woman in the High Peaks on Saturday, forest rangers were called to assist an injured hiker on a nearby mountain.

A 35-year-old man from Brooklyn slipped and injured his lower leg while hiking Little Haystack Mountain. He was able to make his way to the false summit of Haystack Mountain, where he was able to call for help.

Forest rangers were in the area searching for 61-year-old Hua Davis, who had been reported missing Saturday morning. Davis was found dead from hypothermia Saturday afternoon.

Rangers made their way to the injured man and called for a state police helicopter, which was in area searching for Davis, to evacuate the man. The helicopter crew assisted the forest rangers, who packaged the man for transport to Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake.
