Rally for Rural Women’s Issues Saturday in Placid

LAKE PLACID — New York State United Teachers will host a Rally for Rural Women’s Issues Saturday. The event will highlight a variety of concerns, including income inequality, education and healthcare access for women and families in the North Country.

In a press release, NYSUT Executive Vice President Jolene DiBrango said, “Women’s rights are human rights, and women’s issues need to be addressed in every community in New York State. When women succeed, communities succeed.”

Participants will gather at 1:30 p.m., Saturday at the Crowne Plaza, 101 Olympic Drive, for opening remarks then walk in solidarity through the village to a 2:45 p.m. rally at the Adirondack Community Church, 2583 Main St.

NYSUT Second Vice President Paul Pecorale said eliminating a wage gap is important to progressing women’s rights.

“I’m proud to lend my voice in support of these important issues,” he said in the press release.

Along with participants from Lake Placid and surrounding areas, a busload of NYSUT educators and students from Massena, in St. Lawrence County, will travel to the event.

Rally attendees will hear from a variety of speakers highlighting the past, present and future of the women’s movement in the North Country and the state. Attendees will also view artifacts from the Lake Placid-North Elba Historical Society’s exhibit “Centennial Suffrage: Women’s Place in Society.”

NYSUT members will also participate in other statewide women’s rallies throughout the Jan. 19 weekend.
