A red eft is seen on the forest floor along the trail to the Brothers mountains in Keene Valley Saturday. A red eft is the juvenile phase of the eastern newt, which begins its life in a pond with gills, becomes the land-dwelling red eft for two to three years, and then returns to a pond to live the rest of its years as a green and yellow newt.
