Rangers’ busy season continues

State Department of Environmental Conservation forest rangers – along with hundreds of others – have been battling a large wildfire in northern New York, while also helping an injured Boy Scout and a couple of people who fell ill in the backcountry.

Town of Schroon

At about 5:30 p.m. on Monday, July 9, DEC dispatch received a transferred call from Essex County 911 about a 66-year-old man who was both lost and injured near Big Pond, near Schroon Lake.

Rangers Jacob DesLauriers and Arthur Perryman responded and located the man using coordinates provided by dispatch. The two rangers evaluated and assisted the Cohoes man and transported him out to the trailhead. The man declined further medical care.

Town of Keene

A 14-year-old boy on a trip with the Boy Scouts suffered an ankle injury on Tuesday, Jul 10, while hiking the Marcy Brook Trail.

The Marcy Dam interior outpost caretaker located the subject and began to assist him to Marcy Dam, where ranger James Giglinto met them with an UTV. Giglinto and the caretaker assisted the boy and the group leader to the High Peaks Information Center.

Town of Newcomb

Just before 1 p.m. on Thursday, July 12, DEC dispatch received a radio request for assistance for a 74-year-old Vermont man who was feeling ill while at Camp Santanoni. The man had taken a horse-drawn wagon to the Great Camp, but began to feel nauseous and light-headed.

Ranger Benjamin Baldwin went to the camp and picked up the subject to transport him to a waiting Newcomb EMS ambulance.

Town of Newcomb

Assistant Forest Ranger Brendan Jackson reported to dispatch that he had come across a group of hikers, one of which was ill, on Saturday, July 14. The group was camping near Lake Colden, and a 17-year-old male could not keep down either liquids or solids, and needed help back to the trailhead.

Jackson began to lead the group of four to the Upper Works, while Ranger Russell Martin came in to meet them. The group was from a camp in the Speculator area, and dispatch got in touch with the camp to arrange a pickup of the group. The subject’s condition improved and the group was turned over to the camp driver and nurse.
