Former softball head stole $20K, police say

SARANAC LAKE — A former president of the Black Fly Softball & Recreation Club has been charged with stealing money from the organization.

State police arrested Mark K. Deshaies, 51, at 12:59 p.m. on June 17 and charged him with one count of third degree grand larceny, a class D felony.

Deshaies, of Saranac Lake, was arraigned in Lake Placid Village Court the same day and released on $500 bail.

The police report, which was filed in North Elba Town Court alleged that “From September 21, 2011 through June 8, 2016, the defendant did write checks out to himself and out to cash equaling $20,285.00.” The report went on to state “This amount and how it was withdrawn, was not authorized by other board members of the Black Fly Softball & Recreation Club at any time.”

A board member of the Black Fly Softball & Recreation Club said Deshaies took over as the organization’s president in 2008 and resigned from the position this past January.

Deshaies is scheduled to appear in North Elba Town Court at a later date.
