ADK hosts Northeast backcountry stewards

RAY BROOK — The Adirondack Mountain Club hosted wilderness stewardship programs from around the Northeast at the end of May as the summer tourist season begins in earnest.

The ADK put on a one-day training at state Adirondack Park Agency headquarters in Ray Brook for a number of groups, including the 46ers, the Catskill Center for Conservation and Development’s Blue Hole Stewards, Student Conservation Association Backcountry Stewards, Green Mountain Club Summit Caretakers [Vermont], Monadnock Ecological Research and Educational Program Summit Stewards [New Hampshire] and The Nature Conservancy.

The training consisted of mock interactions with backcountry users, radio communications, interpretive training and alpine ecology.

“We feel that stewardship is most successful when we build on the successes and learn from the mistakes of each of our programs,” ADK’s Educational Director Julia Goren said in a press release. “This training is an opportunity to share each other’s experiences. Collectively, we can encourage consistency in our stewardship messages, improving all of our programs. The challenges facing wild lands in the Northeast are not unique, so this is an opportunity to build stronger stewardship throughout the region.”
