Carry the Load returns to Lake Placid Sunday to honor heroes

LAKE PLACID – Carry the Load will continue its annual Memorial Day weekend presence in Lake Placid this year from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Its mission remains simple, inviting one and all to walk, bike or paddle around Mirror Lake in honor of the fallen in order to restore the true meaning of Memorial Day. Participation in this free family event which is a satellite of Carry the Load’s national rallies across the U.S. is open to all.

The walk provides an active way to honor and celebrate the nation’s heroes by connecting Americans to the sacrifices made by military veterans, law enforcement, firefighters, rescue personnel and their families.

The event will step off from Mid’s Park at 11 a.m. after a brief ceremony, and walkers, bikers and paddlers are encouraged to take one or more counter-clockwise laps around the lap until 1 p.m., at which time the band Annie in the Water will perform a free concert live at the Mid’s Park band shell in the center of Main Street. From 2 to 3 p.m., those gathered will be encouraged to take a final loop around the lake.

New this year, the first 100 participants in the rally will receive a Carry the Load T-shirt.

In addition to the Carry the Load cause coming to Lake Placid again this year, local Lake Placid resident Ryan “Smiley” Grady is currently participating with the National rally this year. Starting on May 1 and continuing until Memorial Day, Grady began walking, as well as biking, from West Point Military Academy to the rally’s end in Dallas, Texas in order to raise awareness and respect surrounding Memorial Day’s true meaning.
