Tupper Lake village approves 5K, new garbage rule

TUPPER LAKE — Members of the Family and Friends of Jamie Rose Martin organization attended a Tupper Lake village board meeting Wednesday to ask permission to host a 5K race on May 12.

Meanwhile, the village made a significant change to its municipal garbage pick-up rules.

Family and Friends of Jamie Rose Martin brings awareness about domestic violence by bringing programs into Tupper Lake schools and in January worked with State Assemblyman Billy Jones, D-Chateaugay, and Sen. Betty Little, R-Queensbury, to introduce legislation to the Assembly and Senate requiring certain professionals to report signs of adult domestic violence.

The Jamie Rose Power Walk, titled “Break the Silence on Domestic Violence,” will be based at the Tupper Lake train depot and funds will go toward a scholarship in Martin’s name. Registration is at 9 a.m. and the race starts at 10. The race will start at Washington Street Park and follow the Turkey Trot route. A raffle and auction will be held at the station after.

Runners will cross Wolf Avenue during the race and Tupper Lake police will provide traffic assistance with signs and officers halting traffic.

Martin was killed by her ex-boyfriend Stacey Ayotte in May 2017 in a murder-suicide that rocked the Tupper Lake community.

Garbage bags

Village Mayor Paul Maroun introduced a new rule for garbage pick-up at Wednesday night’s village board meeting limiting the size of garbage bags the Department of Public Works will collect. Several DPW employees have gone on worker’s compensation recently after picking up contractor bags that can weigh as much as 100 pounds.

The new rule will go into effect on April 2 and limits bag sizes to 15 gallons maximum. The same rule will apply to recycling. The village will put “Oops” stickers on bags that are too large to remind residents as the rule is introduced.
