SARANAC LAKE — The village’s third annual St. Patrick’s Day parade went off without a hitch on this cold, sunny Saturday, with strutting lawn chair ladies, dozens of green-shirted Taekwondo students, and a few “Irish” families marching proudly behind kilted pipers.

Beginning at St. Bernard’s School, the parade launched at 1 p.m. and wound down Church Street to Main, ending up at the Harrietstown Town Hall. The short parade route saved many from frozen fingers, including guitarist Kevin Wooley playing as he rode in a pickup truck.

Grand Marshal Ray Scollin marched with previous years’ marshals, state trooper Mike Ryan who served as the first grand marshal in 2016 and Howard Riley, grand marshal of 2017. The three men wore green, white and orange sashes to lead the parade.

Village workers had painted a green stripe down the middle of Main Street the day before so parade participants would not lose their way. The parade was preceded by an Irish breakfast and post-parade reception in the town hall auditorium.

In keeping with the slogan, “Everyone is Irish on St. Patrick’s Day,” families were encouraged to march as clans whether they were Irish or not. In the spirit of the parade, a half dozen or more families adopted Irish identity for the march, and everyone wore green in one form or another.
