Whiteface Ski Center opens Lookout Mountain for first time this winter

WILMINGTON — The Lookout Mountain portion of Whiteface Mountain Ski Center opened Tuesday. Jon Lundin, communication director for the state Olympic Regional Development Authority, said weather delayed the opening.

At 4,000 feet in elevation, Lookout Mountain features ski and snowboard trails such as Hoyt’s High, the Sugar Valley Glades, Rand’s Last Stand and the Wilmington trail, the Northeast’s longest intermediate trail at 2.5 miles.

On Valentine’s Day, Wednesday, Whiteface will host an early-morning first-tracks run for couples. The program will take 14 customers of intermediate level or above on a guided run. To register, email the guest services desk, ski@whiteface.com. Lundin said the trails on the tour are yet to be determined, but it usually features Mountain Run, Excelsior, the Follies and Essex.

On Saturday, Feb. 17, former general manager Bruce McCulley will lead a trail tour, highlighting Whiteface’s Olympic history. Customers will ski and ride down Olympic-level tracks such Skyward, Niagara and Mountain Run, so intermediate and above skill level is required.

Lift tickets are required for both of these tours.
