DEC cancels, postpones New Year’s Day hikes due to cold

The state Department of Environmental Conservation had four guided hikes in the Adirondacks planned for Monday, but due to extreme cold, three have been canceled and one has been delayed by two weeks.

The “First Day” hikes, slated for Jan. 1, were planned for Poke-O-Moonshine, Hadley and Stillwater mountains, as well as Willie Marsh near Gloversville. But with projected temperatures well below zero for New Year’s Day, the DEC has cancelled the Poke-O, Hadley and Willie Marsh hikes. The guided climb to the summit of Stillwater Mountain — which has a fire tower — has been rescheduled to Saturday, Jan. 15.
