Town of Tupper stays under tax cap

TUPPER LAKE — The Tupper Lake town board voted unanimously Oct. 9 to rescind a proposed local law which would override the tax cap as the final budget will stay under the tax cap.

An earlier draft of the town’s budget was approximately $5,600 over the cap according to town supervisor Patti Littlefield, but after tweaking it there will be an extra $30,000 that rolls over to next year. An extra $25,000 from 2016 carried over to this year’s budget and acts as a financial cushion.

Town spending rose $19,874 in 2017 — a 1.17 percent increase — leading to a 50 cent rise in property taxes for homes assessed at $100,000. The 2018 tax cap will also rise 1.84 percent, according to State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli, who sets the rate.

The board held a $40,000 payment for a new highway department truck from the 2018 budget to make more room according to Littlefield. The truck will be bonded and payments for it are scheduled for the 2019 fiscal year.
