Police identify collision victim
Robert Tomlinson lived in Ray Brook group home near where he died when car hit him
RAY BROOK — A car-pedestrian collision early Monday morning claimed the life of group home resident Robert Tomlinson.
State police say a 2010 Toyota Matrix operated by Michael Lynch, 55, of Verdun, Quebec, struck Tomlinson, 59, at the intersection of state Route 86 and Old Ray Brook Road in Ray Brook around 5 a.m.
It was dark at the time, and state police Sgt. Garrett Brown said the driver may not have seen the pedestrian. No charges have been filed, and there are no indications that drugs or alcohol were involved, police said.
Tomlinson lived in a nearby residential home on Old Ray Brook Road operated by Citizen Advocates, an agency that offers residential and vocational services to individuals with disabilities.
“We are deeply saddened by the events involving an individual from our community-based residence in Ray Brook, and our thoughts and prayers are first and foremost with the family members directly affected by the incident,” Citizen Advocates said in a statement Monday afternoon. “Grief counselors are on site and continue to be available for those we support at the residence, family members and staff during this difficult time. Citizen Advocates is working closely with New York State Police and the New York State Justice Center to gather the facts as part of any ongoing or pending investigations.”
Tomlinson was pronounced dead at the scene and transported to Adirondack Medical Center for an autopsy. Essex County Coroner Frank Whitelaw said that, based on Tomlinson’s injuries and the data gathered by autopsy, all indications are that Tomlinson’s death was immediate.
Whitelaw said he knew Tomlinson when he was in school.
“He was always smiling,” Whitelaw said.
State police closed off Route 86 Monday morning, rerouting traffic onto McKenzie Pond Road as their accident reconstruction team surveyed and examined the scene.
The investigation is continuing, and state police ask anyone traveling along Route 86 around the time of the collision to call them at 518-873-2750.
