DEC upgrades St. Lawrence Co. snowmobile bridges

The state Department of Environmental Conservation announced this week that two snowmobile bridges in St. Lawrence County had been upgraded in anticipation of this winter’s sledding season.

The DEC determined that the Chap Hill Bridge — in the Grass River Conservation Easement in Colton — was structurally unsafe for snowmobilers. The DEC said in a press release that its operations staff worked to move the new portable bridge to the location from the Goldmine conservation easement. The St. Lawrence County Snowmobile Association helped on the project.

The DEC also installed another temporary bridge while it works on a plan to replace the damaged Morgan Road bridge on the South Colton conservation easement. The previous bridge was destroyed by a contractor’s overweight vehicle and will be replaced with a permanent bridge.
