Canadian ticketed for operating drone in High Peaks
LAKE PLACID — In what’s likely a first-of-its-kind case, a Canadian man has pleaded guilty to operating a drone in a wilderness area.
The Adirondack Explorer reported that Keven Descheneaux of Trois Rivieres, Quebec, was issued a ticket in June for launching and operating the aircraft near the state Department of Environmental Conservation’s John’s Brook interior outpost.
A forest ranger issued Descheneaux the ticket, and the man pleaded guilty by mail. He was assigned a $75 fine and a $75 court fee.
It is illegal to launch a drone in a wilderness area in New York, but it is legal to launch it somewhere else and then fly it over a protected area like the High Peaks.
