Woman, 20, jogging in Piercefield hit by camper

PIERCEFIELD — A local woman out for a jog suffered a head injury Saturday after she crossed the road into the path of a camper being pulled behind a car.

Brooke M. Dewyea, 20, of Piercefield, was airlifted by North Country Life Flight to University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington after the incident. She was listed in serious condition this morning, according to a hospital spokesman.

State police said Julien Desharnais, 62, of Gatineau, Quebec, was pulling a pop-up camper behind a 2014 Jeep Cherokee around noon on Dewey Avenue. He slowed the vehicle and moved into the on-coming lane to yield to Dewyea, who was running north with traffic.

As the Cherokee was passing Dewyea on the left side, near the intersection with Lake Street, Desharnais told police he saw in his passenger side mirror that Dewyea took an immediate left turn to cross the road, but she apparently didn’t see the pop-up camper being towed behind his vehicle. Dewyea collided with the upper right corner of the pop-up and was hit in the head, police said.

Dewyea was treated for a head injury on the scene by the Tupper Lake rescue squad, then airlifted to Burlington.

The incident took place as the Tupper Lake Tinman Triathlon was happening in the area, but Dewyea was not participating in that race, police said. They added that she was wearing headphones while running.

No tickets were issued.
