Road closures, stockpiled snow no longer needed

SARANAC LAKE — A series of road closures and detours planned for Saturday’s World Snowshoe Championships will no longer be needed now that the event has been moved entirely to Dewey Mountain Recreation Center.

The mountains of snow that village Department of Public Works crews have stockpiled for weeks also will apparently no longer be needed. The snow was going to be used to cover parts of Main Street, where the races were originally going to start.

“That big stockpile we’ve got is nothing more than a dirty decoration, for now,” said DPW Superintendent Jeff Dora. “It will get smaller by Saturday, that’s for sure.”

The village had planned to shut down parts of Main Street and Lake Street for the event, but the closures were rescinded after Thursday’s decision to re-locate the races to Dewey due to warm weather and the potential for rain on Saturday.

Motorists using LaPan Highway/state Route 3 are urged to use caution between Edgewood Road and Cresent Bay Marina due to heavy pedestrian and vehicular traffic at Dewey Mountain, Dora said in a press release.

A parking ban remains in place for part of Broadway and Main Street from 1 to 5:30 p.m. Friday, when an athletes’ parade is planned. The areas affected by the parking ban are Broadway from Olive Street to the top of Berkeley Hill and Main Street from Broadway to River Street.

Broadway and Main Street will be shut down to all vehicle traffic for the parade from 3:50 p.m. thru 5:10 p.m. on Friday.
