Ice Palace construction pushed back to next week

SARANAC LAKE — Ice Palace builders have delayed until next week the start of construction on the symbol and biggest attraction of the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival.

On Tuesday night, Winter Carnival Committee member Dean Baker said the ice in Lake Flower’s Pontiac Bay was thick enough, at 12 inches, to begin cutting blocks for the palace on Thursday. Committee Publicity Chair Colleen O’Neill issued a press release around 9 a.m. Wednesday confirming the Thursday start date.

A couple of hours later, however, O’Neill sent another message saying palace builders had met Wednesday morning and decided to push back the start of work until late next week. She said the decision was made due to the weather forecast.

Daytime high temperatures are expected to be in the mid 30s to the low 40s from Thursday through early next week, with rain likely Monday and Tuesday.

Last year, crews had to drape the partially built palace in tarps to protect it from rain and wind.
