Lake effect snow warnings issued for western, central NY

BUFFALO (AP) — The National Weather Service has issued lake effect snow warnings for parts of western and central New York where up to 3 feet of snow could fall by the weekend.

The warnings are in effect for a 48-hour period starting 6 a.m. Thursday for Jefferson, Oswego and Lewis counties near the eastern end of Lake Ontario and for Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, southern Erie and Wyoming counties in western New York.

Meteorologists say winds gusting up to 35 mph will reduce visibility significantly and cause hazardous driving conditions in some areas.

The forecast predicts as much as 40 inches of snow could fall in the Tug Hill region east of Lake Ontario. Some parts of that area received more than 3 feet of snow from a lake-effect storm just before Thanksgiving.
