Mountainfest returns to the Mountaineer Jan. 13

KEENE VALLEY — The Mountaineer gear store in Keene Valley will host its 21st annual Winter Mountaineering Festival the second weekend in January.

The festival kicks off Friday, Jan. 13 with a lecture by renowned climber Scott Bennett, who has set speed records on El Capitan. Saturday, there will be clinics and demonstrations on ice and rock climbing, snowshoeing and avalanche safety. After classes, there will be a spaghetti dinner and slideshow from climber and author Kelly Cordes, who wrote “The Tower: A chronicle of climbing and controversy on Cerro Torre.”

Classes continue on Sunday and Monday, and Black Diamond-sponsored climber Kevin Mahoney will present his slide show on local first ascents from the Northeast to the great ranges of Alaska and the Karakorum on Sunday night.

Evening presentations are open to the public. All proceeds from Mountainfest go to local and regional nonprofits.
