CycleADK Gives Program funds community projects

Money donated to Speculator, Inlet and North Creek

SARANAC LAKE – Cycle Adirondacks, in partnership with Adirondack Foundation and the Cloudsplitter Foundation, have donated over $5,000 to community generated projects in Speculator, Inlet and North Creek as part of its CycleADK Gives program.

The three communities served as overnight hosts for CycleADK’s 2018 Ultimate Cycling Vacation, which drew over 230 cyclists from across the United States and Canada to the Adirondacks from August 18-24 for a weeklong bicycle tour.

In addition to crowdfunding and donating money to three community projects – improvements to a community trail in Speculator, construction of a public water fountain in Inlet and planning of native pollinators in North Creek – CycleADK guests were able to roll up their sleeves and help.

“The CycleADK Gives program allows our guests to truly connect with our amazing Adirondack communities,” said Doug Haney, Cycle Adirondacks Marketing and Community Relations. “It’s one thing to donate money, but it’s quite another to physically move some dirt and know that it has lasting benefit for the entire community. We do both.”

Community projects funded

Speculator

Speculator received $1,525 for the Sacandaga Pathway, a 1.5-mile long boardwalk and path, which provides a unique opportunity by making wetlands, transitional forest, and upland timber areas accessible to all fitness levels. During the event, CycleADK participants moved gravel for the pathway, fixed weathered interpretive signs and clipped overgrowth from the side of the trail.

“It was a wonderful experience working on the pathway with the folks from CycleADK,” said Jim Tavares, President of the Speculator Chamber of Commerce. “It really gave me a chance to get to know some of the cyclists and to share stories about our town. I look forward to seeing them when they pass through again.”

Inlet

The town of Inlet received $1,895 towards the installation of a public outdoor water fountain at Fern Park which hosts numerous community events throughout the year, including the Black Fly Challenge, an annual gravel bike race each spring.

“We are so thankful to Cycle Adirondacks and its partners for helping us improve Fern Park with the installation of a water fountain,” said Adele Burnett, town of Inlet tourism director. “The town of Inlet is excited to have an area like Fern Park that is available for the public and for activities like Cycle Adirondacks. We look forward to continue to make improvements to the park to make the experience for all even better.”

North Creek

North Creek and the Town of Johnsburg received $1,625 for the installation of a native, pollinator and bird-friendly garden at the Tannery Pond Community Center. While staying and cycling around the community, CycleADK guests were able to assist in the planting of the new garden.

“We are absolutely thrilled to see the funding help us do something that has long-term benefits for the Tannery Pond Community Center and for the environment,” said town of Johnsburg Supervisor Andrea Hogan.

Partnerships

Each campaign was hosted on Adirondack Foundation’s crowdfunding platform AdirondackGives.org and thanks to the generosity of a $1,500 grant from the Cloudsplitter Foundation and an additional infusion of $1,575 from CycleADK and Thule, the 2018 CycleADK Gives Campaigns donated a total of $5,045 to the three communities.
